The main role of the UK National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) is to assist in the prevention and detection of wildlife crime. The unit do this by obtaining and disseminating information from a wide range of organisationsand by assisting police forces and other law enforcement agencies, in wildlife crime investigation. The unit produces analysis which highlights local and/or national threats, and also acts as the conduit between police forces and PAW partners.
NWCU is based in Livingston, Edinburgh, Scotland. It is currently looking for a Detective Inspector or Inspector to act as the head of unit within this developing area of work.
This role would provide an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with a range of law enforcement agencies and private and public sector stakeholders.
Applications are invited from substantive Detective Inspectors/Police Inspectors who have a sound working knowledge of wildlife crime issues, the National Intelligence Model (NIM), UK Wildlife Crime Priorities, and the wildlife crime threats affecting the UK.
Role Summary:
The post holder will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the UK National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) encompassing both national strategic and national tactical requirements tasked to the unit by various sources, management and development of the UK Wildlife Crime Priorities, line management of staff and management of budget.
Responsible for reporting direct to the Wildlife Crime Leads in both the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and Police Scotland and wider the UK Tasking and Coordination Group.
Responsible for the development and formalising of internal and external partnerships at all levels, including both national/ international, and acting as the media spokesperson for the Unit.
Responsible for representing the UK Police Service on wildlife crime issues at both the European Union (EU) and international levels.
This role will include regular travel around the United Kingdom and representation of NWCU at Law Enforcement and partnership meetings. There is an addition of occasional European and Worldwide travel.
This role is based in Livingston, Edinburgh; there is a requirement for the role holder to be in attendance on site for a minimum period each week. This period will be agreed following the successful appointment of an applicant.
Candidates skills/experience
It is essential that applicants have a proven investigative background in the criminal investigation field and be skilled in the use and creation of information searches utilising police intelligence and data systems. They must also be competent in the preparation and presentation of key reports and documents.

This secondment is for a two year duration, which may be extended by mutual consent and is subject to Central Service terms and conditions. The secondment is agreed on a full cost recovery basis.
Applicants must be currently SC vetted or willing to be vetted due to the nature of the post. All appointments are subject to the applicant satisfying this level of vetting at the time of appointment and maintaining it for the duration of the secondment period. In addition, the applicant will be subject to satisfactory PSD and reference checks.
